Activia alternative: plain yoghurt and kefir with live cultures

Published 29 October 2026

If you like Activia for its live cultures, plain yoghurt and kefir have live cultures too. Many plain pots in UK shops list just milk and cultures, with no added sugar, sweeteners, starch or flavourings.

This guide shows what is in a flavoured Activia pot, what to look for on a plain one, and the tubs we checked. We don't make claims about what yoghurt does in your body. We stick to the label.

What is in an Activia pot?

Activia has lots of flavours, so the list changes from pot to pot. Here is Activia Strawberry, from the Activia UK website:

Yogurt (Milk), Strawberry (9%), Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Black Carrot Juice Concentrate, Stabiliser (Pectin), Concentrated Lemon Juice, Natural Flavourings, Concentrated Carrot Juice, Milk Minerals, Cultures

The same page shows 12g of sugar per 100g.

The fat free "no added sugar" strawberry pot is different. On Tesco's website, it lists modified maize starch, natural flavourings and two sweeteners, acesulfame K and sucralose.

So a flavoured pot can have added sugar or sweeteners, plus starch and flavourings. That is not wrong. It is just more than milk and cultures.

What are live cultures?

Live cultures are the bacteria that turn milk into yoghurt. They are what make it thick and a bit sour.

On a label you may see names like these:

  • Streptococcus thermophilus
  • Lactobacillus bulgaricus
  • Bifidobacterium (sometimes called bifidus)
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus

Some labels just say "live cultures" or "yoghurt cultures". Kefir uses a mix of bacteria and yeasts.

What to look for on a plain pot

A plain yoghurt can be very short. Look for:

  1. Milk (and maybe cream) near the start.
  2. Live cultures, by name or just "live cultures".
  3. No sugar, sweeteners, starch, gelatine or flavourings.

"Greek style" and "Greek" are not the same. Greek yoghurt is strained. Greek style can be thickened in other ways. Either can be fine. Just read the list.

These all list milk and cultures, and no added sugar, sweeteners or thickeners.

Skyr

Skyr is a thick, strained yoghurt from Iceland. It tends to have more protein than most plain yoghurts.

Full fat or fat free?

Plain yoghurt comes in full fat, low fat and fat free. All of them can be short lists. But some fat free pots add starch, gelatine or milk powder to make them thicker. So check the label, even on a plain pot.

Milk powder is still milk. It is often added to make yoghurt thicker. One of the kefirs below has it, and we've kept it in, as it lists no sugar, sweeteners or thickeners.

Kefir

Kefir is a sour, drinkable yoghurt. It is made with kefir grains, a mix of bacteria and yeasts. Plain kefir is often just milk and cultures.

Morrisons

Flavoured kefir can have fruit, sugar or sweeteners added, just like yoghurt. So check the label on those too.

How to add flavour at home

Plain yoghurt can taste sharp at first. Here are some easy ways to change that:

  • Stir in fresh or frozen berries.
  • Add a sliced banana or a grated apple.
  • Top with nuts, seeds or oats.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon.

This way, you choose what goes in, and how much.

FAQ

Does plain yoghurt have live cultures? Most plain yoghurt is made with live cultures. Some labels say so. Check for "live" or the names of the cultures.

Is kefir the same as yoghurt? No. Both are made from milk, but kefir uses bacteria and yeasts. It is thinner and more sour.

Does natural yoghurt have sugar in it? Milk has its own sugar, so the label will show some. Plain yoghurt with no added sugar lists none in the ingredients.

Does Activia have sweeteners? Some pots do. The fat free "no added sugar" range lists sweeteners. Check the pot you have.
