Tesco is the store we've checked the most. This guide picks some of the best finds from each aisle, and shows you how to check any Tesco pack.

Does Tesco sell seed oil free food?

Yes. Lots of plain foods have no seed oils, like oats, plain yoghurt, cheese and tinned tomatoes. The trick is knowing which packed foods also pass.

Here is a quick tour, aisle by aisle.

Tesco oils and butter

Tesco sells olive oil, extra virgin olive oil and butter. None are seed oils.

Be careful with "vegetable oil". In the UK, it is often rapeseed oil. See our cooking oils and fats without seed oils list.

Tesco snacks without seed oils

Most crisps at Tesco use sunflower or rapeseed oil. These snacks don't use any oil at all:

Ryvita Original is rye flour and salt. Tesco's lightly salted rice cakes are brown rice and sea salt. See more on our snacks without seed oils list.

Tesco dairy without seed oils

Plain dairy rarely has added oil. These have short lists too, with no gums or sweeteners.

The cottage cheese is cottage cheese and salt. The Greek style yogurt is just milk. The quark is skimmed milk soft cheese. See our cottage cheese without gums list.

Tesco fish and ham

Plain fish and dry-cured ham are easy wins.

The Serrano ham is pork leg and sea salt. The smoked mackerel is mackerel and salt. The jack mackerel is packed in extra virgin olive oil.

Tinned fish in sunflower oil is common at Tesco. Look for olive oil, spring water or brine instead. See our tinned fish in olive oil list.

Tesco cupboard staples

The passata is tomato and citric acid. The oats are just rolled oats. The peanut butter is just roasted peanuts. Some peanut butters add palm oil, so it's worth checking the jar.

Tesco chilled and ready food

Ready food is harder. Many ready meals and sides list rapeseed oil. These don't:

The tofu is soya beans and water. Soya beans are fine. Soya oil is not. The mash is potato, milk, butter, salt and pepper.

Is Tesco bread seed oil free?

A lot of Tesco sliced bread lists rapeseed oil, an emulsifier, or both. Some Tesco in-store bakery loaves don't. Rye crispbread is a good swap.

Under our rules, white wheat flour as the main ingredient is left out. So we don't list white bloomers here, even when they have no seed oils.

Easy Tesco swaps

  • Vegetable oil → Tesco extra virgin olive oil or butter
  • Crisps → Tesco lightly salted rice cakes or Ryvita
  • Tuna in sunflower oil → tuna in spring water, or jack mackerel in olive oil
  • Spread → Tesco salted butter

How to check a Tesco label for seed oils

  1. Find "Ingredients" on the back.
  2. Look for the word "oil" or "fat".
  3. Check which plant it names.
  4. Also check for "lecithin". It is often from sunflower or soya.

These are left out by our rules: rapeseed, canola, sunflower, soya, corn, palm, and any "vegetable oil" or "vegetable fat".

These are fine: olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, butter, ghee, dripping and duck fat.

If you shop online at Tesco, the ingredients are on each product page. Scroll down to "Ingredients".
